The official language is Portuguese External.

There are 22 other languages spoken in Guinea-Bissau. Their geographical spread is complex. The most widely spoken are: Balanta External (270 000 speakers); Upper Guinea Crioulo External (a Creole based on Portuguese) (150 000 speakers); Fulfulde External (180 000 speakers); Madinka External (119 000 speakers); Mandyak External (125 000 speakers) and Papel External (97 000 speakers).
