Cyprus has been militarily divided between the Turkish and Greek Cypriot communities since the summer of 1974. The Greek area is 59% of the island, the Turkish area is 37%. Only Turkey recognises the division of the country.

Mail from, or via, Turkey uses 5-digit Turkish postal codes commencing 99, implemented in 2013. For mail to Northern Cyprus from abroad, use “Mersin 10” in the address block above the line containing the Turkish postal code. The Northern Cyprus postal code should then be on the last line on its own.

Northern Cyprus has six districts (ilçe): Gazimağusa (Famagusta), Girne (Kyrenia), Güzelyurt , İskele , Lefke (Lefka), Lefkoşa (Nicosia). These are further divided into sub-districts (bucağ) and then into towns and villages.
