data virtualization software - Data virtualization software is application programming that facilitates querying data distributed across multiple internal and/or external storage systems.
Organizations have traditionally physically consolidated data within a data warehouse before building an application that will query it. This approach is not very agile, however, in the era of big data. Data virtualization software creates a single logical view of distributed data, hiding the technical aspects of stored data and eliminating the need for administrators to physically consolidate it. The layer of abstraction the software simplifies pulling data in real- or near-real time.
Data virtualization software’s value lies in its ability to programmatically access, combine and transform data into a usable format without the time and expense associated with physically moving the data. In the enterprise, data virtualization products are used to power enterprise search and high-performance transaction processing systems, as well as for business intelligence (BI) reporting.
