dithering - [graphics (computing)] The approximation of shades of gray or colors in a computer image made by arranging pixels of black and white or other colors in alternate layers. The technique gives the appearance of a wider range of color or shades than is actually present in the image. It is widely used to improve the appearance of images displayed on devices with limited color palettes.
