geographic coordinate system - [coordinate systems] A reference system that uses latitude and longitude to define the locations of points on the surface of a sphere or spheroid. A geographic coordinate system definition includes a datum, prime meridian, and angular unit.

Geographic Coordinate System - A system used to measure horizontal and vertical distances on a planimetric map. The City of Toronto’s operational co-ordinate system is currently the Modified Transverse Mercator (MTM) projection, North American Datum 1927 (NAD27), with a truncated northing or y value (-4,000,000).
