Notification - All processing operations or sets of operations intended to serve a single purpose or several related purposes must be notified by the controller to the data protection officer (DPO) of the Community institution or body concerned. The information provided shall include the set of data specified in Article 25 of Regulation (EC) 45/2001.
The DPO keeps a register of these notifications.
Processing operations likely to present specific risks to the rights and freedoms of data subjects must also be declared to the EDPS (Article 27 of the Regulation). This is qualified as a notification for prior checking.

Notification (Data Protection Act) - Notification is the process by which a data controller's processing details are added to a register. Under the Data Protection Act every data controller who is processing personal information needs to notify unless they are exempt. Failure to notify is a criminal offence. Even if a data controller is exempt from notification, they must still comply with the data protection principles. The Commissioner maintains a public register of data controllers available at www.ico.gov.uk . A register entry only shows what a data controller has told the Commissioner about the type of data being processed. It does not name the people about whom information is held.
