Root Cause - The underlying cause of a problem or factor resulting in a problem, as opposed to its precipitating or immediate cause.

Root cause - A factor that caused a nonconformance and should be permanently eliminated through process improvement.

Root Cause - An identified reason for the presence of a defect or problem. The most basic reason, which if eliminated, would prevent recurrence. The source or origin of an event. A root cause of a consequence is any basic underlying cause that was not in turn caused by more important underlying causes. (If the cause being considered was caused by more important underlying causes, those are candidates for being root causes.)
