221 languages are spoken in the Democratic Republic of Congo, with a complex geographical pattern. The official language is French . Widespread languages include: Alur (500 000 speakers); Bangala (3 500 000 second-language speakers); Kituba (4 200 000 speakers); Kongo (1 000 000 speakers); Lendu (750 000 speakers); Lingala (8 400 000 speakers); Luba-Kasai (6 300 000 speakers); Luba-Shaba (1 505 000 speakers); Nandi (903 000 speakers); Ngbaka (750 000 speakers); Shi (654 000 speakers); Songe (1 000 000 speakers); Zaire Swahili (9 100 000 second-language speakers); Tetela (750 000 speakers) and Zande (730 000 speakers).
Names are usually written in the order family name + given name(s). Women retain their maiden names upon marriage. Children take the father’s family name.

Addresses are likely to be written in French. Deliveries are to post office boxes.
With the introduction of a postal code system in late 2022, home deliveries may be started. In these cases the format for urban delivery will be:
Addressee (surname followed by given name(s)) Number[, ]Street Name {Locality} postal code[ ]CITY
And for rural delivery it will be:
Addressee (surname followed by given name(s)) Village name Sector Territory postal code[ ]CITY

A seven-digit postal code was introduced in late 2022. The first two digits indicate the province, the next two the city or township, the next two the sector or neighbourhood, and the final digit the delivery area or post office. They are currently little used.

Congolese geographic telephone area codes have 1 digit (when called from abroad). Subscriber numbers have 7 digits. Mobile numbers are no area codes, 9 digits and commence with 8 or 9.
