10 languages are spoken on Fiji’s 844 islands. The national languages are English and Fijian . Hindi has official status. Fijian (Standard and Western ) is spoken by 46.2% of the population. 48.6% of the population speak Hindi. There are 500 speakers of Gone Dau on the Gone and Dau Islands; 5 300 speakers of Kiribati ; 16 000 speakers of Lau on Lau, Nayau, Lakeba, Oneata, Moce, Komo, Namuka, Kabara, Vulaga, Ogea and Vatoa Islands; 2 500 speakers of Rotuman on Rotuma. Lomaiviti is spoken on Koro, Makogai, Levuka, Ovalau, Batiki, Nairai and Gau. Namosi-Naitasiri-Serua is spoken in south-central Viti-Levu, Namosi, Serua and Naitasiri provinces.
Indigenous Fijians often have no family name. Where they do it may be derived from the father’s traditional given name. Most have two given names, one a Christian name and one a traditional name. It is not unusual for Fijians to use different names at different stages in their life. Indo-Fijians often follow the name conventions used in the Indian sub-continent, and generally do use family names.
