The official language is English . 19 other languages are spoken, including Pulaar Fulfulde (214 000 speakers); Mandinka (350 000 speakers) and Gambian Wolof (121 200 speakers).
Traditionally, Gambian women retain their maiden name upon marriage and continue to be saluted as “Miss”, though this is changing and many married women now prefer to be called “Mrs” followed by the husband’s family name.
Muslims who have been on the pilgrimage to Mecca precede their given names with Al Haji (male) or Al Haja (female).
