The 24-hour clock notation is used, with h, indicating heures, hours, often used as a separator:

The official language is French (16 700 speakers). 50 other languages are spoken. The most widespread of these are: Aja-Gbe (360 000 speakers); Bariba (342 000 speakers); Fon-Gbe (1 400 000 speakers); Gun-Gbe (320 000 speakers) and Yoruba (465 000 speakers).

Any address written in a non-native language will be written in French. Deliveries are made only to post office boxes (Boîte Postale, or BP). These box numbers are preceded with a number to indicate the post office where the box is located as follows:

The box number may be followed by the name of the post office.
Though postal deliveries are only to mailing addresses, street addresses will be found for the use of couriers, visitors etc. As not all streets are named, these may often be descriptive and unstructured. Examples:

Benin numbers have no area codes. Subscriber numbers have 8 digits when called from abroad. Mobile numbers commence with a 9.
