The official language is French (28 000 speakers). 59 other languages are spoken. The most widespread of these are: Kongo (836 000 speakers); Lingala (300 000 speakers) and Munukutuba (1 156 800 speakers).
Any address written in a non-native language will be written in French. The house number precedes the thoroughfare, and the thoroughfare type commences with a lower-case letter. For more information on thoroughfare types and other address components, please see the chapter on France.
As not all streets are named, addresses may often be descriptive and unstructured, using directionals such as “Behind the Cinema”, “Next to the Petrol Station” and “in the vicinity of the Bank”.
