English is the national language but spoken by few as a first language. There are 450 000 speakers of Afar ; 120 000 of Bedawi ; 70 000 of Bilen (in and around the town of Keren ); 140 000 of Kunama ; 63 000 of Nara ; 144 000 of Saho ; 683 000 of Tigré and 1 900 000 of Tigrinya .
Eritreans do not have family names. Both males and females retain the same names throughout life. The first given name is used in correspondence following the form of address. Some Eritreans use their father’s or grandfather’s given name as a family name/second given name.
Tables of names can be acquired: given names , surnames/family names , family name prefixes , forms of address , job titles
Any address written in a non-native language will be written in English.
