FRENCH POLYNESIA
French Polynesia is an overseas country (pays d’outre-mer au sein de la République) of France. It forms part of the French mail system. It includes the Marquesas Islands , Gambier Islands , Austral Islands , Tuamotu Archipelago , Tahiti and the Society Islands .

The official languages are French , having 15 338 first-language speakers, and Tahitian , with 117 000 speakers. The other 7 languages are Austral (8 000 people in the Austral Islands); Hakka Chinese (19 200 people); Mangareva (1 600 people in the Gambier Islands and on Mangareva Island); North Marquesan (3 400 people in the Marquesas Islands); South Marquesan (2 100 people in the Marquesas Islands); Rapa (400 people on Rapa Island) and Tuamotuam (14 400 on Tuamotu and Tahiti).

“Building numbers” in French Polynesia may be followed not by a street name but by the initialism PK, meaning Point Kilométrique, indicating a distance marker from a specified point on each island, in this way:

or
12 PK 15 Bora Bora
Each island has a PK 0 point. The PK 0 point on Tahiti, for example, is in front of the cathedral in Papeete.

All French Polynesia postal codes (Code Postal) commence with the digits 987. The fourth digit indicates an island group, but this does not coincide directly with the administrative subdivisions of French Polynesia. The digits used are:
