The official language is Portuguese .
There are 22 other languages spoken in Guinea-Bissau. Their geographical spread is complex. The most widely spoken are: Balanta (270 000 speakers); Upper Guinea Crioulo (a Creole based on Portuguese) (150 000 speakers); Fulfulde (180 000 speakers); Madinka (119 000 speakers); Mandyak (125 000 speakers) and Papel (97 000 speakers).
Any address written in a non-native language will be written in Portuguese. The rules for Portuguese addresses will be followed - thoroughfare type first with an upper case first letter followed by thoroughfare name then number. For more information on thoroughfare types and other address components, please refer to the chapter on Portugal.
