97.2% of the population speak Kiribati , the national language. There are a small number of English -speakers.

There are post offices in Betiuo, Bairiki and Bikenibeu on South Tarawa. There are no deliveries to houses. Deliveries are to post office boxes or to a poste restante service at the central post office in Bairiki.
On outer islands there are one-man postal agencies, usually located at the Island Council offices, but manned by a central government employee. Incoming mail will be sorted by village, with that for remote villages usually being delivered in bulk by the Island Council messenger.

A postal code was introduced in Kiribati on 30th September 2020. It is written to the right of the island name. The code is six digits in the format:
[KI0]999
The first two characters are always KI. The third character is always 0. The fourth character is 1 for the Gilbert Islands, 2 for the Phoenix Islands and 3 for the Line Islands. The final two digits point to the island and (for South Tarawa) post office.

Kiribati has 3 units ( Gilbert Islands , Line Islands , Phoenix Islands ) split into 6 districts ( Banaba , Central Gilberts , Line Islands , Northern Gilberts , Southern Gilberts , Tarawa ) and 21 island councils - one for each of the inhabited islands ( Abaiang , Abemama , Aranuka , Arorae , Banaba , Beru , Butaritari , Kanton , Kiritimati (Christmas Island), Kuria , Maiana , Makin , Marakei , Nikunau , Nonouti , Onotoa , Tabiteuea , Tabuaeran , Tamana , Tarawa , Teraina ).
