Laos counts 92 languages, most spoken by a few thousand people in isolated villages. The official language, Lao , is spoken by 3 000 000 people. Other main languages are Eastern Bru (64 000 speakers); Hmong (250 000 speakers); Kantu (50 000 speakers); Khmu (389 694 speakers); Kuy (64 000 speakers); Phu Thai (128 000 speakers); Phuan (96 000 speakers); Sô (102 000 speakers) and Tai Nüa (120 000 speakers).
Many people in Laos have only a given name. Do not confuse the form of address (Thao, Nang and Nansao) with being a name. Thao Dang’s name is Dang. Evidently, do not address somebody as Mr Thao Dang as this is repeating the form of address.
Tables of names can be acquired: given names , surnames/family names , family name prefixes , forms of address , job titles
