English is the official language, with some 3 000 speakers. Other languages are Bhojpuri (330 000 speakers); Morisyen (600 000 first-language and 200 000 second-language speakers); Tamil (22 000 speakers) and Urdu (64 000 speakers).

Mauritian postal codes (known locally as Post Code), introduced on 15th August 2014, contain five characters in the format 99999 or A9999. Each code covers a settlement or part of a larger settlement. The first digit indicates the district, the second and third the village council area and the final two digits the sub-locality.

Telephone numbers in Mauritius have no area codes. Fixed geographic subscriber numbers have 7 digits when called from abroad. Mobile numbers have 8 digits and commence with 5 or 7 [2].
