The national language is Standard Arabic . 15 other languages are spoken. The most widespread of these are: Mespotamian Spoken Arabic (1 800 000 speakers in Eastern Syria); Najdi Spoken Arabic (500 000 speakers in the Syrian Desert); Northern Levantine Spoken Arabic (8 800 000 speakers); North Mesopotamian Spoken Arabic (300 000 speakers); Armenian (320 000 speakers) and Kurmanji (Kurdish) (938 000 speakers).
There is heavy prejudice against Kurdish-speakers - its teaching in schools is forbidden and its use heavily discouraged. It is therefore unlikely to be found in addresses.

All area codes for Syrian telephone numbers, when called from abroad, have a length of 2 digits. Fixed line subscriber numbers have 6 or 7 digits, mobile subscriber numbers have 7 digits and use the area codes starting 9.
