The official language, Tajik , is spoken by some 53% of the population. There are some 237 000 Russian-speakers and 873 000 Northern Uzbek speakers. 9 other languages are spoken.
Russian patronymic names and forms of address are still used by some Tajiks. Others use Tajik versions. Tajik names are usually composed of a given name followed by the father’s given name in this way:
Layeq Shirali
where Shirali is the father’s given name.
Tables of names can be acquired: given names , surnames/family names , family name prefixes , forms of address , job titles
A table containing information about the relevant position of elements within address blocks can be acquired
Postal codes consist of a block of 6 digits. This is the same code that was used before the independence of Tajikistan from the Soviet Union. All codes commence with 7. The first two digits indicate the republic and region, the next two the district and the final two the post office. If the fifth digit is ‘0’ then the postal code refers to a rural post office. In all other cases it is an urban post office.

The city known as Kurgan-Tyube during the soviet period is now called Qurghonteppa. Leninabad is now known as Khujand and Khorog as Khorugh.

Tajik area codes for fixed lines range in length between 4 and 6 when called from abroad. Mobile numbers have area codes of between 2 and 3 digits. Full telephone numbers are 9 digits long. Mobile area codes are 50, 91, 917-918, 92-93, 95-99.
