The official language is French (3 000 speakers). 42 other languages are spoken. The most widespread of these is: Aja-Gbe (110 600 speakers); Akposo (94 900 speakers); Éwé (861 900 speakers); Gen-Gbe (200 900 speakers); Gourmanchéma (120 500 speakers); Kabiyé (489 200 speakers); Lama (117 400 speakers); Moba (189 400 speakers); Nawdm (145 600 speakers); Ntcham (100 000 speakers); Tem (204 000 speakers) and Waci-Gbe (365 500 speakers).
Any address written in a non-native language will be written in French. Deliveries are made only to post office boxes (Boîte Postale, or BP).
Though postal deliveries are only to mailing addresses, street addresses will be found for the use of couriers, visitors etc. As not all streets are named, these may often be descriptive and unstructured. Examples:
