The official language is English . Tswana (1 070 000 speakers) is also a national language. 28 other languages are spoken. The most widespread are: Afrikaans (20 000 speakers); Gabake-Ntshori (20 000 speakers); Kalanga (160 000 speakers); Kgalagadi (35 000 speakers) and Yeye (20 000 speakers).

Deliveries in Botswana are through post office boxes, post offices or private bags. The last line in the example above gives the name of the postal town through which the letter is channelled.
Though postal deliveries are only to mailing addresses, street addresses will be found for the use of couriers, visitors etc. As not all streets are named, these may often be descriptive and unstructured, but usually written in English. Examples:

In November 2022 and April 2023 a number of changes were made to the districts and sub-districts of Botswana, with some sub-districts being upgraded to districts and some district names disappearing. Botswana now has 25 districts and 6 town councils (shown in the list below with an asterisk). The district names are not used in addresses:

Botswanan telephone numbers have no area codes. All fixed line numbers are 7 digits long, mobile numbers are 8 digits long. Mobile numbers commence with a 7.
