The national language is English , spoken by some 69 000 people. A pidgin English, Liberian English , is spoken by about 1 500 000 people as a second language. 32 other languages are spoken in Liberia, the most important being Bassa (347 600 speakers); Dan (200 000 speakers); Southern Kisi (115 000 speakers); Klao (184 000 speakers); Liberia Kpelle (47 400 speakers); Loma (141 800 speakers) and Mano (185 000 speakers).
Women generally take their husband’s family names upon marriage.
