The official language is Inuktitut (Greenlandic, also called Kalaallisut in Greenland) (40 000 speakers), an Inuit (Eskimo) language. Danish (7 830 speakers), the official language before June 2009, still widely used.
Addresses are written in this format:
Recipient name Thoroughfare[ ]number postal code[ ]SETTLEMENT NAME
for example:
The postal code should be separated from the town name by two spaces.
The address may be written in Greenlandic or Danish.

Greenland belongs to the Danish postal system and, like Denmark, all its postal codes consist of a block of 4 digits placed before and on the same line as the settlement name. All Greenland postal codes begin with the number 39. Each settlement has its own postal code.
